LITHUANIAN NATIONAL INDICTED FOR RECEIVING STOLEN GOVERNMENT PROPERTY
AIVARIS SARMAITIS, age 23, a citizen of Lithuania, was indicted by a federal grand jury today and charged in a one-count indictment with receiving stolen government property, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to court documents, from May 2011 through February 2012, SARMAITIS communicated via e-mail and telephone with an undercover Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent to negotiate the purchase of items he believed to be stolen from the U.S. military, specifically, a night vision image intensifier tube.
SARMAITIS had been previously charged by a criminal complaint, was arrested and appeared before a United States Magistrate in Miami, Florida on February 15, 2012. U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry L. Garber set a personal surety bond of $500,000, which has not yet been perfected by SARMAITIS.
If convicted, SARMAITIS faces a maximum term of ten (10) years imprisonment, and a $250,000.00 fine.
This case is being investigated by Special Agents U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement/Homeland Security Investigations and prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Gregory M. Kennedy.
